What GOTS is

The Global Organic Textile Standard is a certificate issued to a company, not a description a brand may apply to itself. An approved certification body audits the company and issues a scope certificate: it names the licence number, the certifier, the operations covered (spinning, dyeing, sewing, trading, retail), the product categories, and a date on which it expires. Every one of those facts is published in the standard's own database.

Three consequences follow, and they are the reason this directory exists.

The certificate belongs to a company, not to a garment. A holder may sell certified and uncertified goods side by side. GOTS says so itself: a certified operation's whole catalogue is not automatically certified, so the label on the item is what settles a specific product.

The scope matters as much as the certificate. A certificate covering “trading” and “retail sales” says the company handled certified goods; it does not say the company made them. The scope of every certificate found here is printed on the brand's own page, unedited.

It expires. A licence current on the day it was read can lapse weeks later. Every finding here carries its expiry date so you can check it against today.

Common questions about GOTS certification

What does GOTS certified actually mean?

That a named company passed an audit by an approved certification body and holds a scope certificate: a licence number, the operations it covers, the product categories, and an expiry date. It is a statement about a company and a scope, on a date — not a permanent property of a brand.

If a brand is not in the GOTS database, is its organic claim false?

No, and this directory never says so. A record can be missing because the certificate is held by a supplier rather than by the brand, because the holder's legal name differs from the shop-front name, or because the database is still being repopulated — a caveat the database itself publishes. Of the 28 brands checked, 13 were confirmed and the rest are unconfirmed, which is a statement about what could be found, not about what is true.

Can I trust the GOTS logo on a garment?

The label on a certified item carries the licence number of the certified entity, and that number can be looked up in the public database. A logo on a web page with no number behind it cannot be looked up by anyone, which is why this directory records whether a brand publishes its number at all.

How many of these brands publish a certificate number of their own?

Three of the 28 publish a number a reader can check: two print their GOTS licence number and one prints its certification body's client number. In all three the number matches the scheme's own record. Every other brand's certificate, where one was found, was found by searching the database rather than by reading the brand's site.
